Undead Guide  Undead Abilities  Important Undead  Undead History
World of Warcraft Undead History
Created by the Lich King, the undead armies of the Scourge scoured the eastern lands and forced the free peoples to flee to Kalimdor. Sylvanas Windrunner, hero of the elves of Quelthalas was one of the Lich King's greatest adversaries. After the fall of the elven capital Arthas twisted her soul into that of a Banshee to repay her for the frustration she caused. However, just as Ner'Zhul plotted against the demon Kiljaeden, so did Sylvanas plot against the Lich King.

With the power of the Scourge broken and fading after the defeat of Archimonde at the battle of Mt. Hyjal, Sylvanas regained her free will and lead a rebellion against the Dreadlords who remained in Lodaeron. The Banshee Queen named her group of renegades "The Forsaken" and they soon set up a stronghold in the Undercity in the Tirisfal Glades. Hating the demons who corrupted their souls and hating the living who still had their own, the Forsaken now bide their time until they can extract their vengeance on all of them. An alliance of convenience has formed between the Horde and the Forsaken, though its hold is tenuous at best.

Characteristics

Just like the lands they now inhabit, the Undead are a mere shell of what they once were. Known for their shambling gaits, their dull glowing eyes and their gaunt appearance it would be hard to describe them as anything other than walking corpses. Unable to feel pain and being animated by unnatural forces they are often stronger and faster than they were in life. Those with souls like to think that their minds have been dulled and their intellects diminished by their enslavement to the Lich King.

Lifestyle-

The world itself is a mockery to the Forsaken. Being animated dead, the Forsaken do not need to grow crops or raise families. Consequently, their society is less shaped by the future as it is focused on their past lives. Left with the bitter memories of their former lives, the undead still try to live as they once did. They have shops and buildings and a city they call their own. Yet their daily existence is made up mostly of coming to grips with their present reality, or letting hatred burn over the loss of the reality they had stripped from them. Their lives are filled with pain and a sense of detachment and their society reflects this. When one does not need to worry about sustenance, old age or raising a family it can lead to brooding and detachment. Both of these feelings are almost palpable within the confines of the Undercity.

Technology-

Some argue that the state of "undeath" rips from the individual the ability to be creative and to explore things from new perspectives. This may explain why the undead are able to craft blades as they did in life but yet from them there are no true advances in weaponry or technology. They are pillagers and scavengers from the other races and their technology reflects this.

The Art of War-

The undead draw their power from the darkness in their souls and the chaotic magics that keep them alive. One would be hard pressed to challenge their warlocks in their ability to master the dark arts. In battle the undead feel no pain and do not fear death. In fact, most welcome the idea of being released from their tortured state and will not flee out of self preservation. Although they have their undying hatred for the Legion and the humanity they were ripped from, they also lack any true passion for life. Some argue that this lessens their ability in battle for they can never truly care about their compatriots or the causes they fight for.
